The 1986 Chalfant Valley earthquake struck the southern Mono County and surrounding incorporated and unincorporated of the Bishop - Chalfant Valley, California areas at 7:42 a.m.. The magnitude 6.2 earthquake was felt as far distant as Salt Lake City, Utah. The earthquake was felt in some counties in southern California. Its epicenter was in Chalfant Valley at a depth of 0.8 kilometers . Many small landslides and spectacular rockfalls occurred in the epicentral area.

Casa Diablo, California

Casa Diablo is a location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mono County, eastern California, USA. Casa Diablo Hot Springs was named “House of the Devil”, by early explorers, for it’s boiling hot springs, rising steam and geysers. This locale is noted as a Native American mining and manufacturing site specializing in obsidian materials. Use of materials from this site is noted at least as early as the Millingstone Horizon. The coastal Chumash people traded for material from this Obsidian source.

Cottonwood Creek (Inyo County, California)

Cottonwood Creek originates in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forests of the White Mountains of eastern California. The creek flows eastward from below the alpine crest of the White Mountains and descends through groves of bristlecone pine, aspen and mountain mahogany, then a woodland of pinyon pine and juniper, and finally into sagebrush as the stream ends in endorheic Fish Lake Valley which is one of the contiguous collection of inward-draining basins that make up the Great Basin.

Bishop Tuff

The Bishop Tuff is a welded tuff that formed 767,100 ± 900 years ago as a rhyolitic pyroclastic flow during the eruption that created the Long Valley Caldera. Large outcrops of the tuff are located in Inyo and Mono Counties, California, United States.
