Phillips' Ferry (Merced River)

Phillips' Ferry, on the Merced River was one of the three main crossings of that river on the Stockton - Los Angeles Road. They were located within 2 miles (3.2 km) downstream of the rapids called, Merced Falls. Later the town of Merced Falls was located downstream from these rapids. Closest to the falls was Phillips' Ferry, then Belts Ferry (later Murray's Ferry near the later town of Merced Falls), and then Young's Ferry a mile and a half below Murray's Ferry.

Lake McClure

Lake McClure is an artificial lake in western Mariposa County, California, about 40 miles east of Modesto. It is formed by the New Exchequer Dam impounding the Merced River, a tributary of the San Joaquin River. The lake was first created by the original Exchequer Dam, built between 1924 and 1926, a concrete gravity arch dam. Exchequer Reservoir's original capacity was 281,000 acre·ft .

2012 Sutter's Mill meteorite

The Sutter's Mill meteorite is a carbonaceous chondrite which entered the Earth's atmosphere and broke up at about 07:51 Pacific time on April 22, 2012. On 3 May 2012 scientists with the Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute utilized an airship to get aerial photography of the strewn field with the current vegetation that may help detect more fragments of the meteorite.
