Jackson Lake is one of the oldest reservoirs in Georgia, 44 miles southeast of Atlanta in a rural area situated within parts of three counties. The Lloyd Shoals Dam was built in 1910 by Central Georgia Power Company, and electricity was originally generated for the city of Macon.

Continuing south into Newton County, the river joins the South River in Lake Jackson, 2 miles upstream of the junction of the Alcovy River to form the Ocmulgee River.
