Tropical Gardens of Maui (4 acres) is a commercial nursery with botanical garden, located at 200 Iao Valley Road, Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. The gardens are open daily without charge. The gardens were established in 1987, and are located in a valley floor at approximately 800 feet elevation. Plants are labeled with botanical name, common name, and country of origin.

Wailuku, Hawaii

Wailuku is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 15,313 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Maui County. Wailuku is located just west of Kahului, at the mouth of the ʻĪao Valley. In the early 20th century Wailuku was the main tourist destination on Maui, though it has since been eclipsed with the rise of the resort towns such as Kaʻanapali, so much that there are no hotels to speak of in Wailuku.

Battle of Kepaniwai

The Battle of Kepaniwai ("Battle of the Dammed Waters of Īao" or Kauwaupali, "Battle of the Clawed Cliffs") was fought in 1790 between Hawaiʻi Island and Maui. The forces of Hawaiʻi were led by Kamehameha I, while the forces of Maui were led by Kalanikūpule. It is known as one of the most bitter battles fought in Hawaiian history.
