The passenger steamer City of Columbus ran aground on Devil’s Bridge off the Gay Head Cliffs in Aquinnah, Massachusetts, USA in January 1884. She was owned by Boston & Savannah Steamship Co. and was built in 1878. She was an early iron steamer with a tonnage of 2,200. She drew 26 feet and had a length of 275’ and Beam of 26’. Coast Guard Station Menemsha
United States Coast Guard Station (Small) Menemsha is a United States Coast Guard station located in Menemsha, Massachusetts, within the town of Chilmark. The United States Life-Saving Service (a forerunner to the Coast Guard) established a station at Gay Head in 1895. In 1952, the Coast Guard station located at Cuttyhunk was moved by barge to Menemsha, replacing the Gay Head station. The station was not renamed Menemsha, however, until 1974.
