Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes". The county is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi, Micropolitan Statistical Area. The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc county.
