The name is derived from the French amitié, meaning "friendship. " Its county seat is Liberty. Amite County is part of the McComb, Mississippi, Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Liberty is a town in Amite County, Mississippi. It is part of the McComb, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 633 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Amite County. Liberty was incorporated on February 24, 1809. The Mayor is Richard H. Stratton. There are eleven sites in or near Liberty that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
