Battle of Clark's Mill

The Battle of Clark's Mill was a battle of the American Civil War, occurring on November 7, 1862 in Douglas County, Missouri. Having received reports that Confederate troops were in the area, Capt. Hiram E. Barstow, Union commander at Clark's Mill, sent a detachment toward Gainesville and he led another southeastward. Barstow's men ran into a Confederate force, skirmished with them and drove them back.

Assumption Abbey (Missouri)

Assumption Abbey is a community of monks of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, popularly known as Trappists. The monks first came to Ava, Missouri from New Melleray Abbey in Iowa in 1950 to establish the monastic life here. The Assumption Abbey is popular for its fruitcakes. The fruitcake recipe they use was developed in its bakery, with the help of world class chef Jean-Pierre Augé, who at one time served in the royal employ of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Douglas County, Missouri

Douglas County is a county located in South Central Missouri in the United States. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the county's population was 13,684. The county seat is Ava, which is the only incorporated city in Douglas County. The county was officially organized on October 29, 1857, and is named after U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas and later Democratic presidential candidate.

Souder, Missouri

Souder is an unincorporated community in northern Ozark County, Missouri. It is thirteen miles north of Gainesville and is located on a county road off Route 95. The post office closed in the 1990s, mail is now served by Wasola.

Squires, Missouri

Squires is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. Squires is located about eight miles south of Ava on Route 5. The original Post Office application was filed by John Squire, an Englishman, who wanted to establish the Post Office of "Squire's, Missouri" to be housed in his general store. The request for a Post Office was granted March 21, 1888.
