Camp Butner

Camp Butner was a United States Army installation in Butner, North Carolina during World War II. It was named after Army General Henry W. Butner. Part of it was used as a POW-Camp for German prisoners of war in the United States. Several major US Army formations used the camp as a staging area during the war, to assemble and organize prior to being deployed to the Western Front. These formations include the 78th Infantry Division.

Butner, North Carolina

Butner is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census]. Butner was managed by the state of North Carolina from 1947 through 2007. A bill passed by the North Carolina General Assembly incorporating the town was signed by Gov. Mike Easley on July 27, 2007. It is the former site of the U.S. Army's Camp Butner, which was named for Major General Henry W. Butner (1875–1937), a North Carolina native.

It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. FCC Butner is about 45 miles northwest of Raleigh, the state capital. The facility is noted for having Bernie Madoff as one of its inmates, who is convicted for perpetrating the largest ponzi-scheme in history.

The facility also has an adjacent satellite camp that houses minimum-security male inmates. FCC Butner is located near the Research Triangle area of Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.
