It is located on county road Main Street, one mile north of the combined state highways 200 and 85, at Main's intersection with county road First Avenue. The population was 6 at the 2000 census. Rawson was founded in 1913 and incorporated, and attained the status of a small rural town. The government of Rawson was dissolved in 2002.

McKenzie County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,360. Its county seat is Watford City. McKenzie County was first created by the March 8, 1883 Dakota Territory legislature but eliminated in 1891 due to a lack of settlement. The county was then recreated by the 1905 state legislature, with the county government first organizing on April 20, 1905. The name comes from early North Dakota politician Alexander McKenzie.

Watford City High School is a public high school located in Watford City, North Dakota. It currently serves about 320 students and is a part of the McKenzie County School District #1. The athletic teams are known as the "The Wolves". Athletic teams in the area not affiliated with Watford City High School have other mascots, such as the hockey teams' mascot "The Oilers" and the public legion baseball teams' mascot "The Walleyes".
