Wounded Knee Creek

Wounded Knee Creek is a tributary of the White River, approximately 100 miles long, in southwestern South Dakota in the United States. Its Lakota name is Chankwe Opi Wakpala. It rises in the southeastern corner of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation along the state line with Nebraska and flows northwest. It is the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, in which the 7th US Cavalry under Colonel James W. Forsyth massacred approximately 150 Sioux, mostly women and children, many unarmed.

Shannon County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 13,586 at the 2010 census. Its largest community is Pine Ridge. The county is entirely within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and contains part of Badlands National Park. The county's median household income makes it the forty-eighth poorest county in the United States. In recent years, its residents have become more politically active, voting in state and national elections.
