La Marque (formerly Lamarque) is a city in Galveston County, approximately 50 miles south of Houston, Texas. The city population was 14,509. La Marque experienced considerable growth in the 1950's. During this period of growth, La Marque provided a general administrative, trades and crafts workforce helping to support the petrochemical complex in adjoining Texas City, Texas. It is the hometown of Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Robin Armstrong.

Texas City Refinery explosion
On March 23, 2005, a fire and explosion at BP's Texas City Refinery in Texas City, Texas killed 15 workers and injured more than 170. The Texas City Refinery was the second-largest oil refinery in the state, and the third-largest in the United States with an input capacity of 437,000 barrels per day as of January 1, 200. BP acquired the Texas City refinery as part of its merger with Amoco in 1998. The explosion occurred in an isomerization unit.
