PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 master’s degrees and four doctoral degree programs through nine colleges and schools. PVAMU is one of Texas' land grant universities. The facility opened in 1960. Edward L. Blackshear served as principal of the school, then known as Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College, from 1897 to 1915.

KPVU 91.3FM is a college radio station located on the campus of Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, 25 miles northwest of Houston. The station's playlist mainly consists of jazz, but at other times it plays Urban AC-level R&B and Gospel as well.
