The station began in Mineola, Texas as KMOO. It was moved to Canton by consultant Don Werlinger. Owing to a snafu in the permitting (evidently there wasn't any) the licensing had to cleaned up by registered PE Jack Sellmeyer.

The county is named for Isaac Van Zandt, a member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas. Until May 2009, Van Zandt County was a completely dry county.
