It is currently used mostly for football matches, with it being home to several Angolan league clubs, including Petro Atletico, Sport Luanda e Benfica, and Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto. The stadium holds 50,000 people. The stadium was the site of a deadly stampede on 1 January 2013 during a New Year vigil, which killed 10 people and injured over 120 more.
