Varbitsa (river)

Varbitsa is a river in the Eastern Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria. The Varbitsa river, a tributary to the Arda, the main river of the Rhodope Mountains, runs through 8 municipalities, 6 of them within the region of Kardjali and 2 in the region of Smolyan. It is the lifeline of the area, with industrial, drinking and irrigation water coming out, and refuse, raw sewage and industrial waste going in.

Dzhebel is the administrative center of a municipality, which apart from Dzhebel itself, contains 47 other villages and has a population of 9093. The municipality is mainly populated by ethnic Turks, which are more than 99% of the total population.

Ustren

Ustren is a village in the Kardzhali Province, southern Bulgaria. As of 2006 it had 296 inhabitants. The population is 100% Turkish. The Turkish name for the village is Ustra. The village is situated in a mountainous area in the eastern Rhodopes 11 km to the south-west of Dzhebel. There is a school and a chitalishte. It is famous for the Medieval fortress of Ustra, located 4 km to the south of the village.
