The town was first mentioned in 1451 as Tran; its name was also rendered as Turun, Tuin, Turan, Taran throughout the 15th–16th centuries. Under the Ottoman Empire it belonged to the Sanjak of Niš. One distinctive feature of the town is the dialect of the Bulgarian language spoken in Tran, which is part of the Torlakian dialect group.
