It is located in the southern part of the province, along its border with the state of North Dakota in the United States. A population of 4,125 persons was reported in the 2006 Census, a slight decrease from the 4,183 reported in the 2001 Census. The towns of Altona, Gretna, and Plum Coulee are all located geographically within the municipality, although they are all administratively separate entities.
