Stockholm is the seat of government for the rural municipality of Fertile Belt No. 183. Named after the capital of Sweden, the town was founded in the 1880s by Swedish settlers, and was incorporated on June 30, 1905.

As well, the municipality provides policing, fire protection and municipal governance for the rural district, with a reeve as its administrator.
