The peninsula had great strategic value, as coastal artillery based there would be able to reach more than halfway across the Gulf of Finland.

Upinniemi

Upinniemi is a village in the municipality of Kirkkonummi in southern Finland. It is located approximately 12 km south of the municipal centre. Upinniemi is dominated by the naval base, which is one of the largest military installations in Finland. The headquarters of the Gulf of Finland Naval Command is also situated there.

Tolsa railway station

Tolsa or Tolls is a station (actually only a halt) on the VR commuter rail network located in the town of Kirkkonummi, Finland, between the Jorvas and Kirkkonummi stations. The station has a platform path with an overpass warning signal. The Tolsa station has two tracks, with track one serving trains towards Kirkkonummi and track two towards Helsinki. Trains going to tracks 2 or 3 in Kirkkonummi go via track two.

Kirkkonummi railway station

Kirkkonummi railway station is a railway station in the municipality of Kirkkonummi, Finland, between Siuntio railway station and Tolsa railway station. Kirkkonummi railway station is served by long-distance trains between Helsinki Central railway station and Turku Central railway station, and by the VR commuter rail lines Y, S, U and L. Track 1 serves trains going to Turku, and local trains S, U and L. Track 2 serves trains coming from Turku, and local trains to Helsinki.

Mäkiluoto

Mäkiluoto is a Finnish island in the Gulf of Finland, just to the south of Porkkala peninsula. It is part of Kirkkonummi municipality. The whole island is an unmanned military installation and access for civilians is heavily restricted. A number of coastal artillery guns are emplaced there.
