Nonnensee

The Nonnensee is a lake in the borough of Bergen auf Rügen, Vorpommern-Rügen district, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is located northwest of the town of Bergen auf Rügen and is a very shallow lake. As a result, attempts were made as early as 1859/60 to drain the lake for agricultural land. Since about 1970 the lake was artificially drained and dried out. In 1993 the pumping station was shut and the lake re-established.

Rügen

Rügen (also lat. Rugia for easier pronounciation) is Germany's largest island by area. It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The "gateway" to the island of Rügen is the Hanseatic town of Stralsund.

Rügen (district)

Rügen was a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The district of Rügen was created in 1806 by the Swedish administration of Swedish Pomerania. At first it was named Amt Bergen, in 1810 it was renamed to Kreis Bergen. On 4 September 2011, Rügen was merged to Vorpommern-Rügen. The district was bordered entirely by the Baltic Sea. The nearest districts were Nordvorpommern and the district-free city Stralsund.

Bergen auf Rügen Abbey

Bergen auf Rügen Abbey (German: Kloster Bergen auf Rügen) was a monastery for Cistercian nuns established on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. It lasted from the end of the 12th century to the early 16th century as a Roman-Catholic monastery and then, until 1945, as an Evangelical aristocratic nunnery.

Muttland

Muttland comprises the main section of the German island of Rügen, excluding the Rugian peninsulae and small surrounding islands. The predominant land use is agriculture. Grasslands are found in very small proportions. There are nature conservation areas in the south, which are reported as a resting place for migratory birds. Larger towns are Bergen auf Rügen, Garz and Putbus .
