Emscher

The Emscher is a relatively small river and tributary of the Rhine, flowing through the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. Its total length is 84 km with an average discharge near the mouth into the lower Rhine of 16 m³/s (cubic metres per second). The Emscher has its source in Holzwickede, east of the city of Dortmund, and flows west through the Ruhr area.

Wesel–Datteln Canal

The Wesel-Datteln Canal is a 60 km long canal in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It runs along the northern edge of the Ruhr Area, from the Rhine near Wesel to the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Datteln . It forms an important transport connection between the Lower Rhine and northern and eastern Germany, together with the parallel Rhine-Herne Canal. Construction of the Wesel-Datteln Canal was started in 1915, and the canal was opened in 1930. It runs parallel to the river Lippe.

Wesel citadel

The Wesel citadel is the largest intact fortification system of the Rhineland and was built 1688–1722 in Wesel according to plans by Johan de Corbin, in the form of a pentagonal star, with each point of the star being a bastion. The citadel was the core of the fortress of Wesel. It is currently used as a cultural centre.

Lippe (river)

The Lippe is a river in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Rhine and 255 km in length. The source is located at the edge of the Teutoburg Forest in Bad Lippspringe close to the city of Paderborn. It runs westward through Paderborn, Lippstadt and then along the northern edge of the Ruhr area, crossing the city of Hamm and the towns Lünen, Haltern and Dorsten. The river finally enters the Rhine at Wesel.
