Āraiši lake dwelling site

Āraiši lake dwelling site is a popular tourist location with original and reconstructed remnants of Latvian prehistory. It is a unique nationally important archaeological site: remains of the 9th–10th centuries Latgalian fortified settlement on the island of Āraiši lake. Today the lake dwelling is partially reconstructed and visitors can see rebuilt prehistoric Latgalian wooden buildings.

Amata Municipality

Amata Municipality is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2000 by merging Amata parish and Drabeši parish, but in 2009 it absorbed Nītaure parish, Skujene parish and Zaube parish, too the administrative centre being Drabeši.

Amata River

Amata is a river in Gauja National Park in the Middle Latvian Lowland. It flows from lake Kukala in Vidzeme, 66 km, to the river Gauja. The riverbanks feature Devonian red sandstone cliffs, and rapids. The river Amata is one of Latvia's fastest rivers. It has one of the deepest and most unusual valleys of all the rivers in Vidzeme, with up to 45 m high sandstone and dolomite banks. One of the steepest bank of Amata is the Zvārtes rock.

Gauja Formation

The Gauja Formation is a Middle Devonian fossil locality in Estonia and Latvia. It is named after the Gauja River, where it is exposed along the banks. The Gauja Formation has a maximum thickness of 80 m . It is composed of weakly to moderately cemented layers of fine-grained to very fine-grained sandstone. The layer is predominantly light to yellowish-gray in color, but can be pinkish brown or variegated. It is mostly composed of quartzose arenites.
