Battle of Wilkomierz

The Battle of Wilkomierz (also called the Battle of Vilkomir, Ukmergė, Pabaiskas, Swienta or Šventoji) took place on September 1, 1435 near Ukmergė, by the Šventoji River in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The word "pabaiskas" is a Lithuanization of the Polish word "pobojowisko", meaning "battle site" and did not come into use until after the battle itself.

Pabaiskas

Pabaiskas is a small town in Ukmergė district of Vilnius County, Lithuania, 10 kilometres south-west of Ukmergė, with 249 inhabitants. The Battle of Pabaiskas took place here in 1435, when Sigismund Kestutaitis defeated Švitrigaila and his Livonian Order allies. Pabaiskas was built afterwards to commemorate the battle. There is a Holy Trinity Church in the town, built in 1436 by Sigismund Kestutaitis. A more modern stonework church was built in 1821–1836 m. The architect was J. Levoisier.

Algirdas

Algirdas (c. 1296 – May 1377) was a monarch of medieval Lithuania. Algirdas ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1345 to 1377, which chiefly meant monarch of Lithuanians and Ruthenians. With the help of his brother Kęstutis, who defended the western border of the Duchy, he created a vast empire stretching from the Baltics to the Black Sea and reaching within fifty miles of Moscow.

Kernavė

Kernavė was a medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and today is a tourist attraction and an archeological site (population 318, 1999). It is located in the Širvintos district municipality located in southeast Lithuania. A Lithuanian state cultural reserve was established in Kernavė in 1989. In 2004 Kernavė Archaeological Site was included into UNESCO world heritage list.
