Waimakariri Gorge
The Waimakariri Gorge is located on the Waimakariri River in inland Canterbury in the South Island of New Zealand. Like its neighbour, the Rakaia River, the Waimakariri runs through wide shingle beds for much of its length, but is forced through a narrow canyon as it approaches the Canterbury Plains. Much of the gorge is followed by the Midland line. The Waimakariri Gorge Bridge was built in 1876 by William Stokes.

Kowai River
The Kowai River is a river in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. It rises on the southern flanks of the Torlesse Range and travels south, emerging from the foothills of the Southern Alps near Springfield. The river turns east across the upper Canterbury Plains before joining the Waimakariri River. State Highway 73 follows the river as it climbs towards Porters Pass.

Waianiwaniwa River
The Waianiwaniwa River is a river in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. The source is in the foothills of the Southern Alps and it is a tributary of the Selwyn River. The Central Plains Water Trust is seeking approval to dam the river for a contentious irrigation scheme. The Central Plains Water Enhancement Scheme is opposed by environmental groups such as Fish and Game and Forest and Bird, and by the locally-based Malvern Hills Protection Society.
