Samaria

Samaria, or the Shomron is a mountainous region in northern Palestine, roughly corresponding to the northern West Bank. The name derives from the ancient city Samaria, the capital of the Kingdom of Israel. During the 1967 Six-Day War, the entire West Bank was captured by Israel from Jordan, which had captured it in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Jordan ceded its claim to the area to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in November 1988.

Huwwara Checkpoint

Huwwara checkpoint was a major Israel Defense Forces checkpoint at one of the four main exits from Nablus. It was established on October 2000 to prevent smuggling of explosive belts and weapons from Nablus to be used in terror attacks in Israel. The facility was named for the nearby village of Huwwara. The checkpoint has prevented the smuggling of significant amounts of explosives and other weapons. In 2004, soldiers apprehended a 12-year-old boy wearing an explosive belt.

Mount Gerizim

Mount Gerizim is one of the two mountains in the immediate vicinity of the West Bank city of Nablus, and forms the southern side of the valley in which Nablus is situated, the northern side being formed by Mount Ebal. The mountain is one of the highest peaks in the West Bank and rises to 2849 feet (881 m) above sea level, 228 feet (69.5 m) shorter than Mount Ebal.

Balata

Balata Camp is a Palestinian refugee camp established in the northern West Bank in 1950, adjacent to the city of Nablus. It is the largest refugee camp in the West Bank. Balata Camp is densely populated with 30,000 residents in an area of 0.25 square kilometers.

Mitzpe Yosef

Mitzpe Yosef is an Israeli settlement outpost in the West Bank. Located on Mount Gerizim near Nablus, it falls within the jurisdiction of Shomron Regional Council. The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law, but the Israeli government disputes this. The population consists mostly of hasidic Jews belonging to the Breslov sect.
