Battle of Tannenberg
The Battle of Tannenberg was an engagement between the Russian Empire and the German Empire in the first days of World War I. It was fought by the Russian Second Army against the German Eighth Army between 26 August and 30 August 1914. The battle resulted in the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army. A series of follow-up battles destroyed the majority of the First Army as well, and kept the Russians off-balance until the spring of 1915.

Stębark German: Tannenberg is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Grunwald, within Ostróda County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. It lies approximately 25 kilometres south-east of Ostróda and 40 km south-west of the regional capital Olsztyn. The village has a population of 630. Prior to 1945 it was in East Prussia. The immediate district is primarily known for two historic battles which took place there.

It lies approximately 27 kilometres south-east of Ostróda and 42 km south-west of the regional capital Olsztyn. The village has a population of 420. The village is close to the site of the Battle of Grunwald (1410), which is commemorated by a museum and memorial site.
