Vorotynsk, Peremyshlsky District, Kaluga Oblast

For an air base, see Vorotynsk air base. Vorotynsk was one of the Upper Oka towns and seat of the mediaeval Princes Vorotynsky. It was first mentioned in the Hypatian Codex under the year 1155. In 1480, Vorotynsk was the principal base of Russian operations against the Tatars during the Great standing on the Ugra river. The town is thought to have been situated slightly downstream from the confluence of the Oka and the Ugra Rivers.

Ugra River (Oka)

Ugra is a river in Smolensk and Kaluga Oblasts in Russia, left tributary of the Oka River. The east-flowing Ugra joins the north-flowing Oka at Kaluga and the united river, called the Oka, continues east to the Volga. In the 16th century, the Ugra-Oka juncture was the western end of a line of forts protecting Muscovy from Tatar raids. The river is known for the Great stand on the Ugra River. Its length is 399 km and its basin 15,700 square km.

Peremyshl, Russia

Peremyshl is a rural locality and the administrative center of Peremyshlsky District of Kaluga Oblast, Russia. Population: 3,279; 3,235; 3,168. Formerly a capital of one of the Upper Oka Principalities, Peremyshl contains the ruins of a mid-16th century cathedral which collapsed in the 1980s from neglect. For descendants of the local rulers, see Vorotynsky and Gorchakov.

Peremyshlsky District is an administrative and municipal district, one of the twenty-four in Kaluga Oblast, Russia. It is located in the east of the oblast. The area of the district is 1,156 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the rural locality of Peremyshl. Population: 14,137; 13,952; 16,105. The population of Peremyshl accounts for 23.2% of the district's total population.
