The area of the district is 3,660 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the town of Chukhloma. Population: 11,346; 13,574; 15,466. Chukhloma is a town and the administrative center of Chukhlomsky District of Kostroma Oblast, Russia, located on Lake Chukhloma, 50 kilometers from the railway node Galich and 171 kilometers northeast of Kostroma. Population: 5,411; 5,464; 5,597. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1381, and was destroyed during the Time of Troubles. It was granted town status in 1778. Near the town there is a historical family estate of the Lermontov family.

Chukhloma Lake is a freshwater lake in Kostroma Oblast in Russia. It is located at around {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:58|47|N|42|37|E|type:waterbody_region:RU|| | |name= }}, at an altitude of 148 meters above sealevel. It has an area of 48.7 km², and an average depth of 4.5 meters. The lake is almost circular in shape, with a diameter of 6–7 km. The shores are flat and boggy. The bottom consists of mud and silt. It is frozen from late October to late April.
