Sovetsky, Leningrad Oblast

Sovetsky is an urban locality in Vyborgsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, and a station of the Vyborg–Primorsk railroad. It is situated on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Vyborg on the Karelian Isthmus. Population: 7,131; 6,607; 6,471. Until the Winter War and Continuation War, it had been the administrative center of the Johannes municipality of the Viipuri province of Finland.

Battle of Honkaniemi

The Battle of Honkaniemi was fought between Finnish and Soviet forces on 26 February 1940. This battle was fought by tanks, the only time they were used in the Winter War. The commander of the Finnish II Corps, General Harald Öhquist, had attached the Jaeger Battalion 3 and the 4th company of the Armoured Battalion to the 23rd Division. The 23rd was responsible for the area around Lake Näykkijärvi, just to the southeast of Viipuri, the second largest town in Finland.

Pribylovo, Leningrad Oblast

Pribylovo (also Klyuchevoye, Finnish: Makslahti) is a rural locality (a logging depot settlement) in Vyborgsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Karelian Isthmus, on the eastern shore of the Bay of Vyborg. The settlement hosts an air base and a naval military airfield with ten medium-sized and twelve large revetments. The airfield guards the approach to Saint Petersburg from Helsinki, Finland. Pribylovo is also a station of the Primorsk-Vyborg railroad.

Vyborg Library

The Municipal Library in Vyborg, Russia, (built during Finnish rule when the city's name was Viipuri in Finnish) is an internationally acclaimed design by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The library, built in 1933–35 is considered one of the first manifestations of "regional modernism". It is particularly famous for its wave-shaped ceiling in the auditorium, the shape of which, Aalto argued, was based on acoustic studies.
