Demidov, Smolensk Oblast

Demidov is a town and the administrative center of Demidovsky District of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Kasplya River at its confluence with the Gobza River. Population: 7,333; 8,786; 10,198. Demidov was founded in 1499 as a settlement of Porechye (Поре́чье) and granted town status in 1776. In 1918, it was renamed Demidov after a local Bolshevik Yakov Demidov (1889–1918).

Kasplya River

Kasplya is a river in Russia and Belarus, a left tributary of the Daugava River. Its length is 224 km, the first 157 km in Russia, and the rest in Belarus. It starts from Lake Kasplya at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:54|59|N|31|38|E||| | |name= }}, and joins the Daugava in the town of Surazh. The town of Demidov is situated on the Kasplya.
