Shchyokino (town), Tula Oblast

Schyokino is a town and the administrative center of Shchyokinsky District of Tula Oblast, Russia, located on the Moscow—Simferopol highway 25 kilometers south of Tula. Population: 58,139; 61,588; 69,251; 72,000 (1977). It was founded in 1871 in connection with the development of brown coal deposits and soon supplanted Krapivna as the main settlement in the district. It was granted town status in 1938. The name derives from a village of Shchyokino, which then grew into a town proper.

Yasnaya Polyana

Yasnaya Polyana was the home of the writer Leo Tolstoy, where he was born, wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and is buried. Tolstoy called Yasnaya Polyana his "inaccessible literary stronghold". It is located 12 kilometres southwest of Tula, Russia and 200 kilometers from Moscow. In June 1921, the estate was nationalized and formally became his memorial museum. It was at first run by Alexandra Tolstaya, the writer's daughter.

Sovetsk, Tula Oblast

Sovetsk is a town in Shchyokinsky District of Tula Oblast, Russia, located on the Upa River, 43 kilometers south of Tula. Population: 7,536; 8,770; 10,077. It was founded in 1950 as the work settlement of Sovetsky (Сове́тский). It was granted town status in 1954.

Tula State University

Tula State University (TSU) (Russian: Ту́льский госуда́рственный университе́т, ТулГУ) is the biggest state university in Central Russia. Since May 2006 its rector is Mikhail Vasilievich Gryazev, professor, doctor of technical sciences. More than 20,000 students, 400 post graduates, more than 600 foreign students from 30 countries study at Tula State University.
