Free State (province)

The Free State (Afrikaans: Vrystaat, Sotho: Foreistata; before 1995, the Orange Free State) is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bloemfontein, which is also South Africa's judicial capital. Its historical origins lie in the Orange Free State Boer republic and later Orange Free State Province. The current borders of the province date from 1994 when the Bantustans were abolished and included into the provinces of South Africa.

2009 Harmony Gold mine deaths

The 2009 Harmony Gold mine deaths occurred in late May and early June 2009 in Free State province, South Africa. At least 82 miners, many from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, died from inhalation of poisonous gasses created by a May 18 fire in the mineshaft. Critically, the ranks of unemployed, independent and redundant miners are unofficially tolerated within unsecured, less-profitable mines.

Matjhabeng Local Municipality

Matjhabeng Local Municipality is an administrative area in the Lejweleputswa District of the Free State in South Africa, that includes the city of Welkom. The name is a Sesotho word meaning "where nations meet". It is derived from the migrant labour system where people from various countries like Lesotho, Mozambique, etc. meet to work in the mines of the Goldfields.

Phakisa Freeway

Phakisa Freeway is a motor racing circuit located in Welkom, South Africa. From 1999 to 2004, the venue hosted the South African motorcycle Grand Prix of the MotoGP championship. It has a capacity of 60,000 spectators and opened in 1999. The track has a 4.24 km road course and a 1.5 mile oval course.
