Tadmor Prison

Tadmor prison is located in Tadmur in the deserts of eastern Syria approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Damascus (Tadmor, or Tadmur is the Arabic name for Palmyra). The structures were originally built as military barracks by the French Mandate forces. Tadmor prison was known for harsh conditions, extensive human rights abuse, torture and summary executions.

Palmyrene Empire

The Palmyrene Empire (260–273) was a splinter empire, that broke away from the Roman Empire during the Crisis of the Third Century. It encompassed the Roman provinces of Syria Palaestina, Egypt and large parts of Asia Minor. The Palmyrene Empire was ruled by Queen Zenobia for her infant son Vaballathus. The capital of the short-lived empire was the city of Palmyra.

Fakhr-al-Din al-Maani Castle

Fakhr-al-Din al-Ma'ani Castle or Palmyra Castle is a castle on a high hill overlooking the site of Palmyra, and named for the Druze emir Fakhr-al-Din II, who extended the Druze domains to the region of Palmyra during the 16th century. The castle was probably built by the Mamluks in the 13th century. The castle was surrounded by a moat, with access only available through a drawbridge.

Tadmur District

Palmyra District is a district of the Homs Governorate in Syria. At the 2004 Census it had a population of 76,942. The centre of the district is the city of Tadmur.
