United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Zone

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 350 on 31 May 1971, to implement Resolution 338 (1973) which called for an immediate ceasefire and implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 242. The resolution was passed on the same day the "Agreement on Disengagement" was signed between Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, finally establishing a ceasefire to end the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Valley of Tears

The Valley of Tears is the name given to an area in the Golan Heights after it became the site of a major battle in the Yom Kippur War. On 6 October 1973 the Syrian 7th Infantry Division attacked the Israeli 7th Armored Brigade in the area between Mount Hermonit and a southern ridge known as "Booster" in Israel, or Tel el Mekhafi in Arabic. The Syrians started the offensive with an artillery barrage, but failed to move tanks across the anti-tank ditch.

Quneitra

Quneitra is the largely destroyed and abandoned capital of the Quneitra Governorate in south-western Syria. It is situated in a high valley in the Golan Heights at an elevation of 1,010 metres (3,313 feet) above sea level. Quneitra was founded in the Ottoman era as a way station on the caravan route to Damascus and subsequently became a garrison town of some 20,000 people, strategically located near the ceasefire line with Israel. Its name is Arabic for "the little bridge".

Quneitra Crossing

The Quneitra Crossing is a ceasefire line crossing between Syrian controlled territory and the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights. Syrian Druze from the Golan Heights are permitted to cross through the passage to study, work and live in Syria. The crossing is also used for the export of apples grown by Israeli Druze farmers under the auspices of the Red Cross. The only concrete guard post along the border is at the Quneitra crossing.

Shouting Hill

The Shouting Hill is a hill in the Israeli controlled portion of the Golan Heights. The hill is situated near the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the area of the Golan that is occupied by Israel. During the Six Day War, Israel captured the majority of the heights. The Shouting Hill is located just close to the ceasefire line that separates Syrian controlled territory and the territory occupied by Israel. The Druze community members of the Golan Heights were separated after the war.
