Gypjak

Gypjak (also known as Kipchak) is a small village about 10 kilometers away from the Turkmen capital of Aşgabat. The village is known as the home village of the first President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov. Niyazov, while president, built the Kipchak Mosque and a tomb there for his family. It is in this tomb where Niyazov was buried on December 24, 2006. The Gypjak Mosque, lies across a highway from the rest of the village but is generally open to both male and female visitors for prayer.

1948 Ashgabat earthquake

The 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, at a magnitude 7.3 Mw, occurred on 6 October 1948 near Ashgabat, in the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. Due to censorship by the national government, the Ashgabat Earthquake was not much reported in USSR media. The scholars tend to agree that ban on publicity of the extent of earthquake casualties and damages did not allow the Soviet government to allocate enough financial resources to adequately respond to disaster. Babadaýhan District

Babadaýhan District is a district of Ahal Province in Turkmenistan. The name Babadaýhan is the Turkmenized form of the Persian name Bābā-Dihqān (بابادهقان), which eans “Forefather Farmer”, a mythological and ritual character whose cult has been reported in agrarian communities of mountainous and lowland Tajikistan, North Afghanistan and adjacent rural areas of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.
