Ince (Wigan) railway station
Ince railway station serves the Ince area of Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester. The station is on the Manchester-Southport Line 17¼ miles (28 km) north west of Manchester Victoria. Until November 1964 Ince was also served by a station at Lower Ince on the line from Wigan Central to Glazebrook (to the now closed Manchester Central). Ince suffered in the 1960s and 1970s from much house clearance and landscaping.

County Borough of Wigan
The County Borough of Wigan was, from 1889 to 1974, a local government district centred on Wigan in the northwest of England. It was alternatively known as Wigan County Borough. The district was created by the Local Government Act 1888, with its boundaries based upon the earlier Municipal Borough of Wigan. Neighbouring township of Pemberton constituted the Pemberton Urban District from 1894 to 1904, when it became part of the county borough of Wigan.

The Wigan rail crash was a railway accident which occurred at Wigan North Western station, England, to a northbound excursion train in the very early morning of 3 August 1873. Thirteen passengers were killed after derailed carriages collided with station buildings.

The Urban Area includes the integrated conurbation around Wigan, (containing the areas of Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell and Wigan itself), along with the areas of Standish, Abram and the West Lancashire town of Skelmersdale. The Wigan Urban Area has a total population of 166,840.
