Wigan Rural District

Wigan was a rural district in Lancashire, England from 1894 to 1974. It comprised an area to the north, but did not include the town Wigan. The district was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as the successor to the Wigan Rural Sanitary District. It consisted of six civil parishes: Dalton, Haigh, Parbold, Shevington, Worthington and Wrightington. The parish of Haigh was an exclave, separated from the rest of the district by Standish with Langtree Urban District.

Westhoughton (UK Parliament constituency)

Westhoughton was a parliamentary constituency in Lancashire, England. Centred on the former mining and cotton town of Westhoughton, it returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The constituency was created for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1983 general election.

Battle of Wigan Lane

The Battle of Wigan Lane was fought on 25 August 1651 during the Third English Civil War, between Royalists under the command of the Earl of Derby and elements of the New Model Army under the command of Colonel Robert Lilburne. The Royalists were defeated, losing nearly half their officers and men.

Standish-with-Langtree

Standish-with-Langtree was, and to a limited extent remains, the name of a local government district centred on Standish, Greater Manchester, in North West England. Historically the name applied to an ancient township in the hundred of West Derby and county of Lancashire. This township became a local board of health area in 1872. Following the Local Government Act 1894, Standish-with-Langtree became an urban district of the administrative county of Lancashire.

Gathurst railway station

On the outskirts of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, the semi-rural Gathurst is a two-platform station on the Southport line 2+⁄4 miles north west of Wigan Wallgate station. The station also serves the nearby village of Shevington, indeed until 1973 (see British Rail Timetable of 1972) was named Gathurst for Shevington.
