It is located close to the border with Russia by the Vitsebsk-Smolensk railroad branch and highway, on the Moshna River. Population: 6,753 (2005) The first known record of the Liozno shtetl (small town with a high Jewish population) is dated by 1654.

Rudnya is a town and the administrative center of Rudnyansky District of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Malaya Berezina River 68 kilometers northwest of Smolensk. Population: 10,030; 9,853; 11,032. It was first mentioned in 1363 as a settlement of Rodnya. It was granted town status in 1926. Rudnya is known as the maiden battle target of the famous Soviet multiple rocket launchers Katyusha.
