This place name comes from the Tupi language. The municipality was founded about Itaquaquecetuba between 1560 and 1563 by Jesuits led by Father José de Anchieta, near the Rio Tiete, the beginnings of the city are based on the Catholic chapel of Our Lady of Acute which was founded by the priest.
