Kostenets Municipality

The Kostenets municipality is one of the 22 municipalities of the Sofia Province, Bulgaria. Its territory is 302 km² and has 14,154 inhabitants as of 2009. It encompasses the Valley of Gorna Banya, along the upper flow of the Maritsa river, surrounded by Rila to the south and Sredna Gora to the north. The region has many warm mineral springs in the spa resorts of Momin Prohod, Momina Banya, Kostenets and Pchelinski Bani.

Momin Prohod

Momin Prohod is located in western Bulgaria and is part of the Kostenets Municipality in the Sofia Province, about 70 km from city of Sofia. In 2006 it obtained administrative autonomy and the status of town (град). It is a health resort and spa in southwest part of Sredna Gora mountain. The resort is an important therapeutic and rehabilitation centre for several diseases. The water of Momin Prohod is second to that of the Narechenski Bani spa in its radioactivity.

Vakarel radio transmitter

The Vakarel Transmitter is a large broadcasting facility for long- and medium wave near Vakarel, Bulgaria. The Vakarel Transmitter was inaugurated in 1937. It has one directional antenna consisting of three guyed masts and another consisting of two masts. The most remarkable mast of the Vakarel Transmitter is the 215 metre tall Blaw-Knox Tower, built in 1937 by the company Telefunken.

Vakarel

Vakarel is a village, 25 km away from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Population: 1984 people. It is situated in the Ihtiman part of Sredna Gora mountains. The village is important transport knot for the railway Sofia - Plovdiv. Near Vakarel is the Trakiya motorway. Vakarel is 822 meters above sea level. About 1 km away from the village is the Vakarel Radio Transmitter. Near Vakarel is the Vakarelian Monastery 'Saint Petka'.

Battle of the Gates of Trajan

The Battle of the Gates of Trajan (Bulgarian: Битката при Траянови Врата, Greek: Μάχη στις Πύλες του Τραϊανού) was a battle between Byzantine and Bulgarian forces in the year 986. It took place in the pass of the same name, modern Trayanovi Vrata, in Sofia Province, Bulgaria. It was the largest defeat of the Byzantines under Emperor Basil II.
