Gerlovo

Gerlovo or Gerilovo is a small geographic and ethnographic region in Northern Bulgaria, a hilly fertile valley in the northeastern Balkan Mountains, south of the Ludogorie region. It lies between the Lisa, Preslav-Dragoevo and Kotel-Varbitsa mountains and covers much of Varbitsa municipality of Shumen Province, with smaller parts in Omurtag municipality and Kotel municipality.

Vardun

Vardun is a village in Targovishte Municipality, Targovishte Province, Bulgaria. Until the 1980s Vardun had over 300 Bulgarian dwellings and several gypsy’s dwellings, separated from the village towards Cherkovna. There were not at that time any Turks living in Vardun. Later on urbanization processes incited movements toward the chief Bulgarian towns. Gradually gypsies began to settle in Vardun and nowadays they form the majority of the population.

Varbitsa Pass

Varbitsa Pass is a mountain pass in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) in Bulgaria. It connects Shumen and Petolachka crossroads. The famous Battle of Pliska was fought in the pass on August 26, 811 between the armies of Bulgarian Empire led by Khan Krum and the Byzantine Empire under Nicephorus I which ended with a decisive Bulgarian victory and the death of the Byzantine Emperor.

Preslav Treasure

The Preslav Treasure was found in autumn of 1978 at the vineyard in Castana, 3 km to the north - west of the second Bulgarian capital – Veliki Preslav. The excavations that followed revealed more than 170 golden, silver and bronze objects including 15 silver Byzantine coins belonging to Constantine VII, Roman II (945 and 959) and other artifacts dating far back to the period between 3 rd and 7 th centuries.

Preslav

Preslav was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 972 and one of the most important cities of medieval Southeastern Europe. The ruins of the city are situated in modern northeastern Bulgaria, some 20 kilometres southwest of the regional capital of Shumen, and are currently a national archaeological reserve.
