Vid is the name of a small settlement in Croatia on the outskits of the town of Metković, famous for the ruins of the Roman city of Narona. It has a well established museum of Roman history in the region, called Archeological Museum of Narona.

Narona

Narona was the name of the ancient Roman city that was located in the Neretva valley in present day Croatia. It was part of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The city was established after the Illyrian Wars and was located on the alluvial planes, between present day city of Metković and village of Vid. It was founded as a Hellenistic emporium in c. 3rd/2nd century BC, first time mentioned in the chapter 24 of the Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax.

Gabela, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Gabela is a town in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, 5 kilometres south of Čapljina and 4 kilometers from Metković, in Croatia. It is situated in the navigable lower course of the Neretva, off the major road linking the coast with the mountainous hinterland. The word Gabela comes from Arabic word for tax (al-qabala).
