Ærø Municipality

Ærø Municipality is a municipality occupying the island of Ærø in southern Denmark. The municipality belongs to Region of Southern Denmark. The first mayor of Ærø is Jørgen Otto Jørgensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party, until 2005 mayor of Ærøskøbing Municipality. Ærø

Ærø is one of the Danish Baltic Sea islands, and part of Region of Southern Denmark. The western portion of the island was the municipality of Ærøskøbing; the eastern portion of the island was the municipality of Marstal. On January 1, 2006, they merged to form the Ærø municipality. Ærøskøbing Municipality

Ærøskøbing Municipality is a former municipality in Funen County on the island of Ærø in southern Denmark. Since 1 January 2006 it has been a part of Ærø Municipality The municipality covered an area of 74 km², and had a total population of 3,731 (2005). Its last mayor was Jørgen Otto Jørgensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party. The main town and site of its municipal council was the town of Ærøskøbing.

Birkholm

Birkholm is a small Danish island off the southern coast of Funen in Ærø Municipality. With an area of just 0.9 km, as of 1 January 2010 it has a population of 10. The flat, low-lying island is just over 2 km long and 2 meters above sea level at its highest point, though the protective dykes are 2.8 meters high. It can be reached by post boat from Marstal on Ærø in 25 minutes.

Avernakø

Avernakø is a Danish island south of Funen. The island covers an area of 6 km² and has about 100 inhabitants. The island can be reached by ferry from Faaborg and Lyø (crossing time is 30 and 70 minutes respectively). Originally, Avernakø was two separate islands, "Korshavn" and "Avernak". In 1937 the two islands were connected by a dam named "Drejet" ("The Turn"), due to its peculiar shape. Main occupations are agriculture and tourism. Children attend the school at nearby island Lyø.
