Castletownshend (Irish: Baile an Chaisleáin) on Ireland's southwest coast, is a village about eight km from Skibbereen, in County Cork, Ireland. The village developed around a small 17th century castle built by Richard Townsend, whose descendants still reside there. As of 2007, the castle is open to the public as a bed and breakfast. The Battle of Castlehaven was a naval battle that took place on the 6th December 1601 in the bay off Castlehaven on the south coast of Ireland during the Nine Years' War between a Spanish naval convoy of six ships and an English fleet, commanded by Admiral Richard Leveson and consisting of four warships. Protecting the Spanish convoy were fortified positions on shore, a castle and 600 Spanish and Irish footmen.
