Peremyshl, Russia

Peremyshl is a rural locality and the administrative center of Peremyshlsky District of Kaluga Oblast, Russia. Population: 3,279; 3,235; 3,168. Formerly a capital of one of the Upper Oka Principalities, Peremyshl contains the ruins of a mid-16th century cathedral which collapsed in the 1980s from neglect. Zhizdra River

Zhizdra River is a river in Kaluga Oblast in Russia, Oka's left tributary. The length of the river is 223 km. The area of its basin is 9,170 km². the Zhizdra River freezes up in late November and stays icebound until early April. Its main tributaries are the Resseta, Vytebet, and Serena. The towns of Kozelsk and Zhizdra are located on the shores of the Zhizdra.

Shamordino Convent

The stauropegial Convent of St. Ambrose and Our Lady of Kazan (Казанская Амвросиевская ставропигиальная женская пустынь, Kazanskaya Amvrosiyevskaya stavropigial'naya zhenskaya pustyn') is a Russian Orthodox convent in the village of Shamordino, Kaluga Oblast, Russia. It was founded near the village of Shamordino in 1884 with the blessing of Saint Ambrose of Optina. It is located on the Serena River, 12 km from Optina Monastery.

Vorotynsk, Peremyshlsky District, Kaluga Oblast

For an air base, see Vorotynsk air base. Vorotynsk was one of the Upper Oka towns and seat of the mediaeval Princes Vorotynsky. It was first mentioned in the Hypatian Codex under the year 1155. In 1480, Vorotynsk was the principal base of Russian operations against the Tatars during the Great standing on the Ugra river. The town is thought to have been situated slightly downstream from the confluence of the Oka and the Ugra Rivers.
