Qatana District

For the Palestinian town near Jerusalem, see Qatanna. Qatana District is a district of the Rif Dimashq Governorate in Syria. At the 2004 officical census, the district had a population of 207,245. The centre of the district is the city of Qatana. The district is located just to the east of Mount Hermon.

Pharpar

Pharpar (or Pharphar in the Douay-Rheims Bible) is a biblical river in Syria. It is the less important of the two rivers of Damascus mentioned in the Book of Kings, now generally identified with the A`waj (i.e. crooked), though if the reference to Damascus be limited to the city, as in the Arabic version of the Old Testament, Pharpar would be the modern Taura. In the early Baedeker Guides it was identified as the Al-Sabirani, a fairly downstream tributary of the A`waj.

1202 Syria earthquake

The 1202 Syria earthquake struck at about dawn on 20 May 1202 (598 AH) with an epicenter in southwestern Syria. Up to 1,100,000 deaths have been associated with this earthquake, although other estimates are much smaller. It was felt over a very wide area, from Sicily to Iraq and Anatolia to upper Egypt. The cities of Tyre, Acre and Nablus were heavily damaged. A magnitude of Ms = 7.6 has been estimated with damage up to 11 on the modified Mercalli intensity scale.

Wadi al-Qarn – Burqush Important Bird Area

The Wadi al-Qarn – Burqush Important Bird Area is a 4,500 ha site in the Qatana District of south-western Syria. It lies at an altitude of 1,175 – 1,500 m next to the village of Burqush in the Anti-Lebanon mountains, near Mount Hermon and close to the border with Lebanon. The site includes the steep slope on the northern side of the wadi, the upper parts of which are vertical cliffs overlooking rocky slopes vegetated with scrub, grass and stunted trees.
