Ostropol

Ostropol, also known as Staryy Ostropil, is a small town on the Sluch River located in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast about 133 miles (222 km) WSW of Kiev, Ukraine. It is located at latitude 49°48' N, longitude 27°34' E and is situated at an altitude of 742.5 feet (225 m). The town of Lyubar is 11.1 miles (18.5 km) from Ostropol. Ostropol was an important Jewish center in the 17th century. The hero of Jewish humor, Hershele Ostropoler, was from that town.

Starokostiantyniv (air base)

Starokostiantyniv is an air base in Ukraine, located 4 km east of Starokostiantyniv. It is a large military base, with numerous reveted areas on both sides of main runway. There are stands for over 35 large aircraft and about 30 small fighters. Units stationed at Starokostiantyniv include: 7th Bomber and Reconnaissance Brigade flying Su-24M, Su-24MR aircraft. In the early 1990s the airbase was home to the 7th Bomber Aviation Regiment flying Su-24M aircraft.

Battle of Lyubar

The Battle of Lyubar or battle of Lubar took place on 14–27 September 1660 near Lyubar, during the Russo-Polish War (1654–1667), between the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (allied with the Tatars) and Tsardom of Russia (allied with the Cossacks). It was the first battle of the 1660 campaign in the south. It ended with a Polish victory. The Russian army retreated and was subsequently destroyed during the battle of Chudniv.

Starokostiantyniv

Starokostiantyniv is a city in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast of western Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Starokostiantynivsky Raion, the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast. The city has a population of 34,700 (2007).

Starokostiantyniv Castle

The Old Constantine Castle is a Volhynian castle built at the confluence of the Sluch and Ikopot' rivers by Prince Constantine Ostrogski in the 1560s. The castle of Starokostiantyniv has withstood many attacks by the Turks and the Crimean Tatars but was successfully stormed by the rebellious Cossacks in 1648. The castle played an important part in Ukraine's struggle for independence when Starokostiantyniv was visited by such national leaders as Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Petro Doroshenko.
