Camp Marmal

Camp Marmal is the largest base of the Bundeswehr outside of Germany. It is located by the side of Mazar-i-Sharif Airport in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, at the foot of the Hindu Kush mountains. The camp was opened in September 2005 and has expanded in recent years. The camp gets its name from the bordering Marmal Mountains.

Mazar-i-Sharif Airport

Mazar-i-Sharif Airport is located 9 km east of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, a journey of 15 minutes by taxi from the center of the city. It is Afghanistan's 4th largest after Herat International Airport, which will be called Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport after the expansion work is completed. Built by the assistance of the Soviet Union in the 1950s, the airport serves the Afghan population north of the country.

1998 Iranian diplomats murder in Afghanistan

The 1998 Iranian diplomats assassination in Afghanistan refers to the siege of the Iranian consulate in Mazari Sharif, Afghanistan during the capture of Mazari Sharif by Taliban forces on August 8, 1998. Initially the death of 8 Iranian diplomats was reported, but later two other diplomats and a journalist were also confirmed dead. The killings of the diplomats had however been carried out by Sipah-e-Sahaba, a Pakistani Sunni group with close ties to the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence.
