Šakvice train disaster

The Šakvice train disaster occurred on 24 December 1953 in Czechoslovakia. A local train was standing at the Šakvice station near Brno, when the Prague-Bratislava express ran into it, resulting in 103 deaths and a further 83 injured. The Ministry of the Interior said there was gross negligence by a number of railway men who had since been arrested. Other reports said that the express train crew had consumed a number of bottles of wine. Other sources have over 100 or 186 deaths.

Dolní Věstonice

For information on the Dolní Věstonice archaeological site, please see Dolní Věstonice (archaeology). Dolní Věstonice is a small village in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It is known for a series of ice age archaeological sites in the area. These sites were used by mammoth hunters, and finds include a triple burial and the Venus of Dolní Věstonice. A small fortress was built here during the Great Moravia period. The place is mentioned in written documents from 1312.

Nové Mlýny reservoirs

The Nové Mlýny reservoirs (Czech: Vodní dílo Nové Mlýny) are three reservoirs behind the Nové Mlýny Dam on the Dyje River in the Czech Republic. The lower reservoir, 1668 ha in area, is the Novomlynska (or Nové Mlýny) Reservoir, the middle reservoir, 1031 ha, is the Věstonice Reservoir and the upper reservoir, 528 ha, is the Musovska (or Mušov) Reservoir.

Klentnice

Klentnice is a village in the South Moravian Region (Jihomoravský kraj) in the Czech Republic. It lies 20 kilometres north west of Břeclav (German “Lundenburg”) and belongs to the okres Břeclav.

Věstonice Reservoir

Věstonice Reservoir (Czech: Vodní nádrž Nové Mlýny II, Věstonická nádrž) is a reservoir on the Thaya River in the South Moravia. It is 1668 ha in area. The reservoir was built on the place of Mušov village. This is a Natural Reserve since 1994 together with the mouth of rivers Jihlava and Svratka.
